One species each day (from my backyard)
This one is from the fern patch by the front door. It's a shady area, in summer and autumn a few degrees cooler then other places, but frost free when temperatures drop below zero elsewhere. I have moved different species of ferns from elsewhere in the garden or treasures from further adventures to this patch to build a bit of a collection. I also wanted to plant some tree ferns here but they would keep too much sunlight out of the already dark kitchen. It was a bit of a struggle again to identify it, but I've got it down to Polystichum vestitum, a native New Zealand prickly shield fern. There's a similar looking one a little further on, but although it is pricklier to the touch, it's smaller and spreading a little, I think this is the one that's named prickly shield fern.
