Church of the Holy Rude
My sepia photo yesterday didn't excite many views on Blip (it was a bit downbeat) so I'm going back to colour today. And there is colour! A beautiful sunny day. Was out ridiculously early with the dog having endured a more or less sleepless night. I've seen all the sun there's been so far today!
The Church of the Holy Rude at the 'Top of the Town' in Stirling was founded in 1129. It is the medieval parish church of Stirling. It has a very old graveyard and an interesting history. The interpretation board there indicates that: '...although there were other burial sites in Stirling, the area around the church was the main burial place until the 1850s. The gravestones are in rows and burials lie facing the east –ready for resurrection at the Last Trump. The area on the north side of the church was unfashionable; poorer people were buried here and did not have gravestones.'
To the right of the church is Cowane's Hospital and to the left and down the hill the Tolbooth. The Top of the Town is a really interesting and historic part of Stirling and well worth a visit.
