Sgwarnog: In the Field

Agios Stefanos

Our most adventurous family excursion of the holiday saw us walk a couple of kilometres up and over the headland to the neighbouring village of Agios Stefanos, where we spent the day on the beach. This was our view down to the village, with the mountains of Albania behind.

It was a busier resort than Arillas, with a greater density of sun loungers and some water sports activity. We found a spot near the surf line, but found that we kept having to adjust backward as the tide inched higher through the day.

I wandered down to the wilder end of the beach, taking a sharp detour up the cliff once it became apparent I was about to stumble into naturist corner.  It was a lucky find, a track that gave access to some scrubby areas where I could look back on the village from the other direction (extra photo #1) and track some butterflies, with Clouded Yellow and Meadow Brown being most numerous.  Find of the day was what seems to be a Pigmy Skipper (extra photo #2), a rather plain and dark skipper which is local to Mediterranean coasts.

Returning through the village brought the closest I was to come to a Greek ghost sign (extra photo #3), and then it was back to our local beach to skip pebbles across the sea (extra photo #4) while the sun set (extra photo #5).
