Something Different

Something different for us today. We were up early to catch the first ferry over to Varenna. We have been booked on a cookery class at Il Caminetto restaurant in Perleda, up a step hill from Varenna.

We were collected from the ferry by taxi and taken to the restaurant for 10:30. After a coffee we settled down to work, or at least the chef did. He gave us a very interesting instruction on the preparation of an Italian meal.

This included a risotto, pasta in the form of tortellone, and a main course of turkey with creamed potato. One of the highlights is the preparation of pasta from scratch, which he made look very easy. I did it once many years ago and found it anything but easy. I decided instead it was easier, much easier, to buy my pasta already prepared.

We finished at about half past four and were taken back to the ferry. The day was excellent value. We got back to the apartment at 6:30, and had no sooner done so than a thunder storm arrived, unlike the last couple of days it arrived with heavy rainfall as well. It did not last long, but we were glad to be back before it started.

The view from the hill where the restaurant is situated is spectacular, it overlooks the whole of the northern part of the lake. This is not a place one would arrive at by chance however, and certainly not walking distance from Varenna.
