Life through the lens...

Green green grass.

This is York Minster, and this is real grass on the floor!
1500 sq metres of it!

York Minister is getting ready for a Diamond Jubilee celebration dinner for over 900 guests, who'll be walking over and dining on the grass.
It is hoped it will raise lots of money for the cathedral's renovation fund.

Grown by Lindum Turf Ltd. Thorganby, York. It is called Wow!Grass!
It is grown on felt made from recycled textiles, and not requiring soil.
The carpet will then be rolled up and removed after the event.
(I think they put some down in Trafalgar Square, London last year to creat a village green.)

I took the photo looking through the main doors, as everyone was setting the tables out this afternoon.
Looks as if it's going to be a very splendid do! (no not invited!)

As usual this was not going to be my blip for today.
The main reason for going to York was to visit the Railfest 2012.
The largest collection of trains etc. in the country ever.
The weather wasn't too bad. Had a some rain to start, but then cleared up.
£15 each was a bit expensive, but someone has to pay for putting such a magnificant display together.
I loved the atmosphere. The sound of the trains, the smell of the smoke, the history of the different engines, both large and small.
There was a great model train layout, with model steam trains which used minute pieces of coal to fire the little boilers. I loved that!
Also miniature railway trains from North Wales, Kirklees, and other places.
These you could ride on as well as some of the large steam trains.
And of course there was the :
Flying Sctosman
Mallard
Sir Nigel Gresley
Tornado
Duchess of Hamilton
and lots, lots more. (not forgetting Hogwarts Castle)
This was MrC's day out, but I enjoyed it too!

Followed by a lovely lunch at one of my favourite little wine bar/grills, Lucia, in Swinegate Court.
Also managed a bit of shopping.
Didn't start raining again until we got back to the car. (Park and Ride)

A very enjoyable day. Now feet up with a cuppa!!
