Viburnum

Viburnam Lantana I think.  It grows in our front hedge - or rather outgrows in our front hedge as each year I have to cut it hard back otherwise we would have a line of trees rather than a hedge.  It's not alone - the aucuba, and mahonia do the same.  Why is it that plants struggle to grow to the size you want and then promptly outgrow it?
