Canal Cleaning

The River Nile is well known for being the life source of the Country. With Egypt having very little rainfall, the Aswan Dam was built in 1902. The population grew and the demand for water also increased. So the Aswan High Dam was constructed in 1969, increasing it's height to 111m and the length stretched 3.8km.

In summer, the river flow is reduced and the winter water stored in the reservoir at the Aswan Dam (Largest in the World) is released. This increases the flow of the Nile and provides the much needed water to the farmers' fields, by a system of irrigation canals.

Whilst out cycling along one of these canals today, I came face to face with this monster! Due to the increase of water, the canals must be cleaned.
It's frightening what is pulled out by the mighty, mechanical claw, as these canals are sadly used as a rubbish tip by the people that live on them. When temperatures soar, these canals are also used to bathe animals, children fish and swim in them and of course they are a natural habitat for the water monitor, egret and other animals, birds and reptiles.
