Tight fit
We've got used to the ingenuity of the squirrels in stealing the bird food, but this one takes the biscuit!
She is one of the latest batch of babies, & is the most persistent squirrel to date; for the past couple of weeks she's been making several raids a day on this nut container, poking her head through the bars, hanging upside down & attacking from below, spinning it - & herself - around & around, & several times falling off with a thud onto the seat below (luckily a softer landing than the concrete beyond that). Today I was aware of she & the others making regular appearances around the feeder, then realised that the nuts were going down much faster than they should have been; & then I saw what she was up to .... goodness knows were the lid to the nut container has got to (hubby made a brief foray onto the patio in the rain & gale-force winds, but couldn't see it anywhere); & goodness knows how she squeezes herself into that tube: she was scoffing so many nuts that we were half expecting her to swell up & get wedged in there - which no doubt will happen once she reaches full size; some of the other squirrels kept chasing her off & having a go themselves, but, whilst one of the adults did manage to reach a paw down inside & extract some nuts, she is the only one who can fit right inside.
Oh well, we've run out of nuts now until the weekend, so tomorrow they'll all have to go hungry; perhaps the absence of food will mean that - unlike this morning - I won't be woken up tomorrow by the din of the squirrels chattering at one another outside my window!
