The woodpecker gets scared

I have been trying to mend some plumbing today and it has been a bit difficult. Whilst having a coffee break at lunch time I spotted a woodpecker clinging to the peanut feeder hanging under the rhus tree.  It has been visiting fairly regularly in the last few days but I haven't managed to record it.  But today my camera was at the ready.

But when I tried to gently slide open the back door I scared it with a slight scraping noise.  It squawked in classic woodpecker style and flew down the garden and up to the top of the tall old ash tree which stands at the top of the steep slope going down to the stream.

It fluttered about various branches and seemed to be searching for some grubs amongst the foliage.  Then it hopped onto this limb and stayed still long enough for me to get a picture.  I still hope to get some close ups of it one day soon, maybe even like those I blipped a couple of years ago, when I filmed one demonstrating how to get food from the feeder to one of its youngsters.  That was so interesting to see at close hand as the young one seemed hardly fledged, and the parent had to shove food into its mouth as it stood on a branch by the feeder.
