Mokoia Island

The famous island in the middle of Lake Rotorua, backdrop to the romance of Hinemoa and Tutanekai. Legend had it that the beautiful lady swam across the great lake to her lover, guided by the sweet sound of his flute, a story still told by their descendants in Rotorua to this day.
