The Spinnaker Tower
Love it or hate it (and there are some who do) The Spinnaker Tower, although controversial, is now ingrained onto the Portsmouth Harbour waterfront. Completed in 2005, five years behind schedule, on the site of HMS Vernon, it is apparently one of the most photographed buildings in this country outside London. I've been asked by non Brits exactly what is it, its just a viewing tower, no more no less, with a cafe on its second floor and cafe at its base. Recently Portsmouth County Council have been under fire from locals for suggesting it be painted red, the colours of its pending sponsors, Emirates, its also the colours of their rivals, the city, port and football team of nearby Southampton, so much so that the powers that be have had to rethink their plans for the colour scheme.
Parochialism lives it seems.
