National Deye
17th of June is Icelandic National Day. On this day in 1944 the Kingdom of Iceland (which shared its king with Denmark) was changed into the Republic of Iceland. Many people believe that Iceland became independent from Denmark on that day but in fact it had been independent from the 1st of December 1918 when the Act of Union was signed declaring Denmark and Iceland to be two sovereign states in a personal union through the Danish king.
But Icelanders are fiercely independent so I'm going to make Thomas J. Whitmore's (fictional president of the U.S.A.) words mine with added flair from William Wallace (the fictional version) on this fine day:
We will not go quietly into the night!
We will not vanish without a fight!
We're going to live on!
We're going to survive!
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!
Tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!
