Give Peace a Chance

The Cumbernauld Community Memorial Peace Garden opened about ten months ago in commemoration of the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

I visited it soon afterwards and it was little more than a couple of granite plaques at the entrance, a partly-completed path and a few dug-up bits of ground where, presumably, some trees, bushes and flowers would be planted. In truth it was quite disappointing. I had expected more and it appeared that it had been opened before it was ready just to meet the August 2014 deadline. I made a mental note, however, to pay a return visit and see what became of the garden.

That second visit was this afternoon, and what a change! The path has been completed; the area has been landscaped; trees, bushes and flowers have been planted; wrought iron benches installed and a sculpture put in place - apparently it was unveiled only last weekend.

As I was wandering round admiring the new-look garden and taking pictures, some other visitors appeared and they told me of some of the plans that were in the pipeline for the park once the funding was in place. Note to self: maybe make a return visit in another ten months time.
