Tromso
So much to see!!
We were docked about a 50 minute walk from the city centre and as we had a trip booked for the afternoon decided to have a wander out in the morning.
We found the Artic Alpine Botanical Gardens, part of the University, less than 10 minutes’ walk away from the ship. It was a little treasure with plants from all over the world that live in similar climates. I took too many pictures and have added one as my extra picture (it wouldn't load!!). I have ideas for planting design in our new front garden which is all stones /slate at present. I will blip it before I start.
The main trip today was to visit the Tromso University Museum, where saw a film about the “Northern Lights” and heard about the Sami culture and history. Then on to the Polaria Arctic Centre, an educational aquarium, with a chance to see bearded seals. The final visit was to the Arctic Cathedral, an ultra-modern design built in 1965, with eleven arched triangles of concrete, steel and glass. The beautiful stained glass window was added in 1972.
Our guide for today was excellent and so informative. It makes such a difference to the experience. He was from South Africa, spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable.
This is a city that warrants a longer stay as it has so much to offer. I would have loved to see the Polar Museum which details Norwegian explorers and hunters.
A very satisfying day :0)
