Volcanic Madeira
The volcanic origins of Madeira can still be seen - it's really clear to me from this Blip.
The amphitheatre that surrounds the urban centre of Funchal was once a caldera, and the island has peaks of 1,860 metres - double Table Mountain!
Fortunately for visitors, volcanic activity stopped about 6,500 years ago. But this activity has endowed the island with a fertile landscape where much was, until comparatively recently, covered in an ancient subtropical rainforest.
This is why the island is so named: 'Madeira' means 'wood' in Portuguese.
