Man Down

All this soldiering is exhausting. One of King James' men is overcome. We celebrated the 350th anniversary of the Monmouth Rebellion with a spectacular re-enactment. Colyton was known as the most rebellious town in Devon, as more men per head of the population went to fight for the Duke of Monmouth when he landed just down the coast at Lyme Regis. They were soundly defeated at  the Battle of Sedgeworth. The notorious Judge Jeffries sentenced the survivors to death or transportation at what became known as The Bloody Assizes. *Two men were hanged, drawn and quartered in Colyton, as an example to those who would rise against the King. We didn't re-enact this bit!
*One of these men had been found hiding in the garden of my house.
Extra pics. 1.The rebels leave for Lyme Regis. 2. Judge Jeffries sentences the rebels. 3. One of the King's men strikes the standard at the end of the day.
