The inevitable bureaucracy  of the immigration office made work look like a preferable alternative today. 

Perseverance won out however and after three years in Japan I successfully made my first application for visa extension. Well, when I say 'successfully' today I simply succeeded in persuading an immigration officer to accept  my application, after two abortive attempts, It will be another two weeks before I learn of the outcome... Fingers crossed :)
