Equal Under The Law
Which way do we go? If our kids are gay, they will be recognized as equal under the law...but what happens to the boys when they walk down the street with their black faces?

The Supreme Court of the United States, in a 5-4 decision, struck down marriage bans across this nation. Justice Kennedy wrote eloquently about liberty and equality under the law. It is the Civil Rights decision of our time.
"They have reaffirmed that all Americans are equal under the law....Today we can say we made our Union a little more perfect."
-President Barack Obama
I am thrilled with this decision. LGBT couples will be able to marry in every state in this nation. There are about 300,000 couples immediately affected. When I saw the celebration as the decision was read on the steps, I teared up. It was even more emotional when the crowd broke out spontaneously in the singing of The Star Spangled Banner.
But the celebration is tinged with other emotions. Grieving for Senator the Rev. Clementa Pinkney, one of the nine who were gunned down in his Charleston, SC church, for the simple crime of being black in America. He will be buried today. Even as the President delivered his uplifting and reassuring words, he was preparing Rev. Pinkney's eulogy.
He reaffirmed that all Americans, regardless of who they are, what they look like or who they love are equal under the law, but I am angry because there is still hatred, taunting, discrimination and crimes committed against people of color by white supremacists and other bigots.
However, today is a grand day of celebration, make no mistake about that! It is a day that will will go down in history. As big as Brown v the Board of Education in 1954. As big as the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As big a day in US history as I may see in my lifetime (and I thought seeing the first black President was it!)
