Arc of Iron
Went for a walk along the Carron Lade on Friday afternoon and around the Carron Dams Local Nature Reserve. Thought I'd post a picture of some green paths or maybe a photo of the boardwalk, but, on leaving the woodland part of the walk, found myself at the Carron Phoenix ironworks and at this magnificent arch. (Can't remember whether I've blipped it before and too lazy to check.)
Anyway, the adjacent plaque (which I've photo-edited into this image) states that it is called 'The Grahamston Gate' and that "this magnificent triumphal arch was made by the Grahamston Iron Company of Falkirk for the Edinburgh International Exhibition of 1886". It was refurbished and re-erected in its present location in 2002.
In addition to the Union Flag, Saltire and the 'Lion Rampant' coat-of-arms at the top of the arch, it also features the coat-of-arms of the City of Edinburgh (a stylised castle on top of a rock) on each of the 'shoulders'.
A magnificent piece of engineering and art.
