Life is like a bowl of cherries?

I never quite understood this quotation, but pondered it yesterday. So to me, sometimes when you are about to embark on something, you don't know how it will turn out, and you just have to take the plunge. Sometimes it turns out sour, sometimes sweet... But if you didn't try, you wouldn't know.
Have to admit, I've never been that keen on cherries, but do love the cheerful print on my new dress.
