Digger

The term "digger" is an overused generic expression by lay people which  makes many who work with such machinery squirm.

Probably the most common "digger" is the tracked 360 degree slewing, backward acting arm and bucket. This is the so called "back actor" type excavator. They come in all sizes and weights and there is usually a clue to the weight in the model number; Cat 245 is a very powerful 45 ton back actor. More unusual you also get a similar looking machine with a forward acting arm and bucket; a face shovel.
There are also many earth spreading and dozing machines, effectively a tracked industrial tractor with a hydraulically controlled blade. The most common of those used to be the Caterpillar make going from Cat D3, small, through D4 up to D9 and D10, monstrous. Beyond this there are haul road grading machines, multi wheeled dump trucks. Small construction sites may use a wheeled tractor with front loading shovel and light weight back actor on the rear. They are very versatile but are restricted by 180 degree slew and rubber tyres.

You are obviously then wondering what this machine is called. It is a Rubbish Bashing Down  Digger
