Romantic ruin
A misty romantic castle is pictured in the National Trust guidebook, but today Scotney Castle was bathed in scorching sunshine. This is all that remains of a castle built in a deep wooded Kentish valley in the late 1300s. Now the remains of the castle are a beautiful feature in the grounds of a Victorian mansion, built by the Hussey family.
It was good to go out and be tourists for a day. Our outward journey was on busy main roads, so we decided to come back through the Kent, Sussex and Surrey countryside. It took twice as long but was so much more pleasant.
