Alive alive oh
This is Shell beach near Denham where we drove to this morning. The beach is made up of bazillions and bazillions of tiny white cockle shells (no bigger than your finger nail - see extra). They thrive in the hypersalinated waters around here. I am guessing that is what caused that misty horizon the other day as the stromatalites are not far from here and apparently there is high evaporation rates. The beach is totally made up of these shells and in parts they are very thick and have formed a limestone. Where we had dinner last night was made from these shell blocks.
The fence is part of Project Eden. It was called the Feral Proof Fence. They have fenced off this peninsular and reintroduced natives such as Mallee Fowl and Bilbies, all of which are said to be doing well. The only flaw we saw was that there was only a normal cattle grate where the road crossed the fence and we thought some enterprising feral cat would have no difficulties leaping across that.
From there we drove on to Carnarvon and One Mile Jetty. It used to be a major jetty for loading cattle but is no longer in use other than for tourists. A train will take you down and back most of the mile for $10. The extra is the school fishing trip. The driver nearly fell out of the train when it came in with the kids and said he was glad that was over and that they only did it two times a year.
From there we drove to Coral Bay where we are now residing in our Resort (notice the absence of the word luxury). We have decided if it has palm trees and a swimming pool it can be called a resort. The caravan park nearby had Karaoke tonight but thank goodness it has finished by 9 pm. We have been fitted for our wet suits for tomorrow as we are snorkelling on Ningaloo Reef. Fingers crossed we have some whale shark sightings but they have had quite a few days of no shows this week and we are getting to the end of the season. On the plus side, the humpies are here in force and partying.
Dinner was delicious, so much so we have booked to go back tomorrow. And finally, the last extra is tonight’s sunset at Coral Bay.
