Wideangle Wednesday: "Architecture"

Firstly, many thanks yet again to JDO who is kindly hosting this Wide-Angle Wednesday in spite of having already hosted Mono-Monday for the last month!
 
I chose this scene for today's challenge as it shows three different types of architecture. The modern building with all the glass is a rather plain 1970s one (it's part of Newcastle's Eldon Square shopping mall, during the construction of which many lovely old buildings were destroyed). The rather beautiful, ornate building reflected towards the right of the photo is Emerson Chambers; this was built in 1903 for Robert Emerson Junior, a local brewer, having been designed by the architect Benjamin Simpson.  

The reflection towards the left of the picture is part of the facade of Monument Mall. Its design is much more in keeping with the neighbouring buildings; although it was built recently (1992) its style matches that of the surrounding architecture very well. Interestingly, the rest of this Mall's facade (not visible in this photo) is actually the preserved front of a much older building, which they cleverly kept in situ whilst building the new shops behind it. Much better, in my opinion, than destroying the old facade.

Of course, having criticised the architecture of the 1970s Eldon Square, I need to recognise that without it I couldn't have taken this blip!!

Just for good measure, this being a wide-angle shot, Grey's monument has crept in as well. I guess that probably classes a fourth type of architecture. It was erected to acclaim Charles Grey, the second Earl Grey, for the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832.
