Newport City Distributor Bridge
Today is the first of Mrs BB days off. Her older brother & sister -in-law are in the UK for a week visiting the daughter (London) and his wifes relatives in West Wales. So today we met up for a long lunch in Chepstow as he headed back to London before returning to South Africa where they've lived and worked for some 35 years.
I did take some family photo's but they're probably only of real interest to the family - so hence todays blip photo of a bridge! Talking about crossings, South Africa will be another country on the list when Mrs BB retires. Her brother is a Chief Quantity Surveyor and has worked on projects like the South African airport. He's just retired but is doing a couple of months stand in work when he returns. His wife is Head of Human Resources for an American company (Computer Associates) dealing in computer software. (Mrs BB & brother and sister are in the Extra Photo.)
Newport City Bridge is a crossing of the River Usk in the city of Newport, South Wales. It was opened in 2004 as part of the construction/re-generation of the Southern Distributor Road/A48 in Newport.
The Bridge opened on 17 November 2004, and is 650 ft long with a dual carriageway in both directions as well as cycle paths on both sides of the bridge.
In 2005 the bridge was recognised by The Structural Steel Design Awards. The judges said of the bridge: "The Usk crossing symbolises the best in British bridge engineering. It combines an elegant design, high quality fabrication and innovative construction. Newport has gained not only another much-needed river crossing, but has gained an elegant steel structure in the process.
