Winter Luxury: Flower Friday#3

It's a perfectly beautiful full sun summer day although it was so cold early this morning (44)F) that if it were not summer I would have turned the heat on.

The Puritans of the Colonies gave the name, Winter Luxury'  to a hard pumpkin so rich and delicious that when things are tough in late winter this one tastes like a luxury. For a Flower Friday blip this big squash blossom is  enjoying the early morning light. The plant has escaped from a deep raised bed. By the time the round pumpkins are ready to harvest the vine should be wrapped over 20 feet out and along the grass.
I read that if you let your vining squash plants grow in the grass there is some chemical in the vine that kills grass. A "no mow" vegetable.

This squash is my all time favourite. I have featured it in the past as a blip and as soup. I planted several this year and now hope for a hot August and September to get them nice and ripe since this heirloom variety is not available in the stores.
