A properly British treat!
First visit this year to pick our own strawberry's today. Went early because that other properly British treat was forecast - yes : July rain! It's currently raining, hailing and thundering as I type this - lovely!!!
At least the mileage covered by this little juicy beauty was just under two miles. A much smaller distance than the supermarket ones, which, even if they are picked just down the road have probably done hundreds of miles.
Some of those less juicy and tasty out-of-season ones have flown thousands of miles to reach our supermarket shelves. Since we started to read the labels on our food we've stopped buying all those vegetables that have travelled huge distances. It seems rather extravagant to buy them. I suppose the other side of the coin is that those goods are supporting needy farmers elsewhere, but, at what cost to our planet?
At least I know where these have come from. Hopefully raspberry's and loganberry's will be ready soon. There was a field growing peas. I love garden peas straight from the pod - yummy!
