Red Squirrel
I spent a wonderful morning at the Cluny House Gardens in Strathtay. Started in 1950 by Bobby & Betty Masterton, this woodland garden specialises in Himalayan plants. It has an important collection of Asiatic primulas including candelabras and a large collection of Trilliums, Arisaemas, Lilliums, Erythroniums and specimen trees including the widest girthed Sequoiadendron in the UK.
Within the garden there is a very important population of Red Squirrels. It took a lot of patience to capture this juvenile as he explored the feeder box.
Red squirrels have been part of the Scottish landscape for thousands of years but there are only 120,000 red squirrels left in Scotland. That’s half the number of grey squirrels.
