William Morris @ Standen NT
On the way back from Mum's, I took the opportunity to visit anothe National Trust house positioned along the North Downs: Standen House.
This one was built for a prosperous London solicitor James Beale and his family in 1894. It was designed by the Architect Philip Webb and contains furnishings (including wallpaper, carpets, curtains and furniture coverings) from William Morris & Co. Philip and William were friends and leading exponants of the "Arts and Crafts" movement, standing for traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and it often usng medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration.
This little cushion, the Orange Tree, was found in the conservatory, and may have been worked by one of the daughters of James Beale. The extra photo shows the fireplace in the dining room which I fell in love with!
