9Bach - Neuadd Dewi Sant (@9bach)
It's just one event after another this week.
Speedway at the weekend, and off to a little bit of Welsh Folk this evening in Saint David's Hall.
I happened to stumble upon 9Bach in the most wonderful of circumstances. We were on our way to Pontypridd to meeting on a Wednesday evening. We just happened to have Radio 2 on, and the folk awards just happened to be on. 9Bach just happened to win the album of the year award, and they just happened to play a track called "Ffarwél" as the show closer. It's a track about the last shift at a mine, and I just happened to be driving down the the most industrial part of the Rhondda Valley .. it was the perfect song for the perfect moment!
I ordered the album from Spillers and picked it up a few days later. It really has been a favourite of mine for the year so far. So we went with down into Cardiff with mum as a treat to see them live on Level 2 in Saint David's Hall.
They were simply awesome live. I only have the current album "Tincian" and they played pretty much all of it as far as I could tell. I, alas have no set list for you for this gig.
If you haven't checked them out you really should. There is so much going on in each song .. wonderful layers of melodies and some fantastically subtle song writing.
I speak very very little Welsh, as did half the audience, which is a testament to their broadening appeal. It's inspired me to improve my Welsh, and I am doing something about that. Watch this space ...
An utterly enchanting and wonderful evening of rich Welsh music ... I want more now!
