After the airmen left
About a mile east of Upper Heyford, a small village in rural Oxfordshire, is a former RAF bomber station. In 1951 it was assigned to the US Air Force and in 1993, when the US lost interest in keeping such a close eye on what is now Russia, the airfield closed and became a large industrial and commercial estate. It has been chosen as one of the places to increase the UK housing stock.
Today I went there for a community education event with display about our work and disovered a bizarre ghost town made of building sites, abandoned concrete bunkers, rusting metal huts, this water tower, meagre barracks still in use as housing and endless fences.
It felt entirely in keeping that only two members of the public turned up to the event.
I had very little time to explore and take pictures but I shall definitely return.
