Rievaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire
This shot was taken from Rievaulx Terrace. We visited here first, viewing the temples, the half mile long terrace with 12 viewpoints down to the ruined abbey. There are also a number of interesting artworks on display in the woodland walk and along the Terrace. A treat to see inside one of the temples, set out as a dining room, with beautifully painted ceiling and cornice.
Then down the steep hill to the Abbey. Founded in 1132, as the first Cistercian abbey in the north of England. Under the third abbot, St Aelred (1147-67), more than 600 lived here - choir monks, lay-brothers and servants.
A hot sunny day, up around 28C. Out for a delicious dinner with my sister and her husband, and then a challenging game of Dixit. A new board game to me.
