Rough Fell
Rough Fell is a hardy, ancient breed of sheep that grazes the upland fells of Cumbria and North Yorkshire. And there were some at Orton Farmers Market this morning.
It takes some skill and strength to shear a Rough Fell sheep - they are quite sizable characters. And when you have people watching, it must make the job even harder. However, this guy went through one sheep after another very quickly - fascinating to watch. (See a close up in extras)
Something I didn't know until today was that Orton has historic links with the Rough Fell, as an annual Tup Fair was held in the village every year, the last time it was there being in 1937. It took place on the main street in the village and farmers came from far and wide to sell their tups. Today Orton retains its links with the Rough Fell, being one of the few places where you can buy Rough Fell meat at the monthly farmers market.
A lively market today. Lots of people enjoying the sunshine . . . and shopping!
