The Final Day

We stayed on for an extra day and decided to head for the hills.

Gaustatoppen is the highest mountain in the county Telemark in Norway. The view from the summit is impressive, as one can see an area of approximately 60,000 km², one sixth of Norway's mainland. There is an elevator system inside the mountain, built for military purposes, which is now a tourist attraction. This ascends from the base of the mountain almost to the summit.

The walk was quite challenging due to the height and boulders but many families with young children were making the ascent. We were grateful of the cafe on top which was doing a roaring trade in waffles and drinks.

To preserve knees two of our party returned down the hill on the elevator leaving three of us to return the way we came.

A great way to finish the holiday.
