The Pier, Saltburn by the Sea

Opened in 1869, it was the first pier along the Cleveland Coast. It was designed by John Anderson, who also solved the problem of visitors getting up and down the steep cliff. He designed the inclined tramway in 1884, using counter-balancing water tanks. It is the earliest surviving example of a funicular in Britain.

After watching the very tense and exciting men's final at Wimbeldon, we drove over for a walk along the pier. I wanted to visit before I return home tomorrow. My sister brought Dad here on his birthday in early February this year, as he had asked to visit the seaside. It was to be his last grand day out, as he died suddenly and unexpectedly the following day.

Good to remember him here, as he had told me how much he enjoyed the waves crashing onto the pier.
