Long day in Copenhagen
We started the day with a very Danish lunch of smørrebrød which is a popular dish of buttered rye bread with various toppings. We had the kartoffelmad which is with potatoes, mayo, red onions, tomatoes and loads of the amazing crispy onions famous in Scandinavia. It was all delicious even though it's pretty simple. We cycled around the city, went to a trendy market area where we had a great coffee which we drank sat on the steps of a newly rebuilt square and did some people-watching.
The city centre is really quite small so it's perfect for exploring by bike. As it's the summer and a weekend, there are so many things happening around, from markets, live music and even festivals. We went to one of the festivals in the afternoon, held underneath a bridge with beer stands, food trucks and a line-up of DJs. It felt like East London.
We did some food shopping and went to Cecilie's apartment to get ready for a barbecue with some of their lovely friends. We had some Danish hotdogs which I'd got a taste for in Brighton about five years ago when a Danish lady opened a stand. We sat outside drinking until around midnight when we moved to a nearby pub and played a local version of billiards. When the pub closed at 2am we went to a bar known for its piano and group singing sessions.
Shortly after we arrived and sat down, the whole bar joined in a rendition of Summer Nights from Grease. The pianist (who seemed to be just a customer) continued to treat us to loads of popular songs until it closed at 6am. It was light outside and our throats were as sore as our heads from all the singing. Such a fantastic day!
