The temples are amazing! It's really hard to accept how and why each temple was built and comprehend how many years it must take. The mayans would rebuild on top of another temple every 55 years, it would take them about 20 years each time. The whole area is about 3 miles long and the mayans built-up the foundations to ensure the area was flat and ready. The temples are all in special positions to allow the sun to cast certain shadows and shine through certain areas on particular days of the year. One temple (temple of warriors) was especially built for when the planets all align every 5000 years.
We also visited the local sacred cenote which was where the bodies got sacrificed after the yearly 5-day ball games. The heads were given to the families and the bodies were thrown into the Cenote.
