Nineteenth Century neon
The service in Rules is staunchly French, as it should be in any fine dining establishment.
Very much an 'English' restaurant, I took my uncle and aunt to dinner there ten or so years ago on one of their rare trips to London.
The beautiful brass plates outside the entrance have been there for over 200 years and were designed to reflect the sunlight. Twinkling in an array of colours, they in turn attracted passing ladies and gentlemen.
It was the door man who described them as old fashioned neon.
