'The Terracotta Church'
We had a very long day....drove to Frimley Hospital to visit my Mum-in-law, who has been in hospital for over five weeks. She had a fall and broke her pubic bone...and at nearly 95 years old its been quite a trauma for her. On Friday she is being moved to a Nursing Home near Dorchester, to be near P's brother. His sister was up from Somerset, trying to sort out her bungalow so it was nice to see her again. We eventually got home at 8.30pm. We are going to be a long way away from her after tomorrow....I do hope she will be happy!
En route we called into Compton, Surrey to visit this church.....I remember going to see it in the Sixties.
The Watts Chapel is a Grade 1 listed Gothic revival chapel. When Compton Parish Council created a new cemetery, local resident artist Mary Fraser-Tytler, the wife of Victorian era painter and sculptor George Frederic Watts, offerred to design and build a new mortuary chapel. A group of local amateurs and enthusiasts constructed the chapel from 1896 to 1898, virtually every villager was involved. The ground plan is essentially circular, from the outside the building has a look of a Roman Italianate chapel. Local villagers were invited to decorate the chapel under Mary's guidance, resulting in an interior that fuses art nouveau and Celtic influences, combined with Mary's own original style. It is all entirely made of Terracotta including the grave stones and seats etc. The interior is also very decorative.....see extra.
