Beach day
Today we spent our first day at the beach. It's just a small pebbly affair with sunbeds but with a good taverna for lunch about 20 paces away and as it is at the end of a sheltered bay there is beautiful flat sea to swim in. There are always lots of yachts moored in the bay but today there seemed to be more than ever. Symi attracts some of the 'super-yachts' of the rich and famous; George Clooney and Naomi Campbell are fairly recent visitors (not together, I hasten to add!).
After returning from the beach I had another little wander through the village. It is very easy to get lost in the narrow winding lanes (supposedly built that way to confuse invaders but probably having more to do with the steep contours of the land) but if in doubt I either a) keep turning right, or b) aim downhill, as either is likely to return you to somewhere you recognise. These cats were relaxing in the shade next to bottles of water salvaged from air conditioning units to water the garden, a typical scene in the old town.
