O Ye, all Ye who walk in Willowwood.
As I was standing at the desk in Kelvingrove today waiting for for my booked group of international young people, this lady approached who wanted to see if we had any work by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. I took her to see what we had and this gesso panel is probably one of her best known works. She often produced gesso panels for her husband's interiors, working on their lounge floor wearing white gloves to protect her hands from the plaster! This is for the Salon de Luxe in the Willow Tearoom in Sauchiehall Street.( Sauchiehall means street of the willow.)
Her image illustrates a poem by Dante Gabriel Rossetti which tells of Willowwood where ghosts of dead lovers roam.
It's typical of an Art Nouveau image with curved flowing lines and shapes based on the female form.
It's a bit of a blurry phone blip!
(Gesso panels are made using plaster of Paris on a hessian backing with beads or bits of glass added to the painted surface.)
