COLOUR IN MY GARDEN
As colourful and beautiful as they are, lilies can pose a problem if you treat them as cut flowers and take them indoors.
Even brushing by them in the garden, can put you in a predicament.
It all stems from the pollen which very quickly can leave stains on your clothes when you brush past, or if indoors can stain a tablecloth or the carpet if the stamens holding the pollen fall.
But the trumpet shaped flowers are really a sight to behold. They can grow to several inches in diameter and each stem may well carry four or more blossoms. When fully open the separate petals are an incredible colour and will bring joy to any garden. The blooms will last only a few days, maybe up to two weeks, but while they are flowering they are a sight worthy of photographing.
If you are cutting them to take indoors it pays to remove the stamens from the centre of the flowers to prevent possible staining.
I’ve heard they can also pose a poison threat to cats too because part of the plant is toxic.
That said, I still consider them one of the most joyous flowers in the garden right now. Only wish we had planted more of them.
