The T-6 Texan II turboprop trainer came about on the basis of the Swiss-made Pilatus PC-9, offered by Beechcraft to meet the US Air Force and US Navy's JPATS (Joint Primary Aircraft Training System) requirement in the 1990s. It won the contest and is now in service with both of those air arms, along with Canada, Greece, Israel and Iraq. Some 800 examples have been delivered thus far; Morocco and Mexico have also selected the type. From the initial T-6A have been developed the upgraded T-6B and T-6C, as well as the armed - and more powerful - AT-6B light attack aircraft.
