The living room,Monks House, Rodmell, East Sussex.
Monks House was the home of Leonard and Virginia Wolf and the interior is pretty well as it was at the time of her death in 1941. The house is set in about one and three quarter acres of land looking out across the unspoiled Sussex countryside. Most of the land is laid out as beautiful flower gardens, but there is also a large vegetable garden and a mixed orchard containing apples, pears, plums, cherries and quinces. After their house in Bloomsbury was bombed in the blitz, Leonard and Virginia spent most of their time at Monks House and she wrote many of her novels here. Virginia was subject to many deep depressions and in March 1941 at the age of 59, she walked out of her house wearing a big overcoat. She filled the pockets with heavy stones and then committed suicide by jumping into the river Ouse. Her body was not found until 20 days later. Leonard had Virginia cremated and her remains lie underneath an Elm tree in the garden.
