Hydraulic Walking.

'TREAD TOE' is a self powered, steel framed walking machine made by artist/sculptor James Capper...... The yellow and white sculpture/vehicle, which resembles a Caterpillar or JCB construction behemoth, includes a cockpit and central hydraulic foot which propels the machine forward.  James Capper designs and builds the machines himself, saying, "I build machines that use industrial hydraulics to move. I'm interested in the problem solving aspect of industrial engineering which requires a combination of creative and practical thought."   Another source said, "We hope that when people see 'TREAD TOE' they will think, 'What the hell is this doing here?' because it looks like a piece of machinery left behind by builders. There is definitely a fun element about it."
I think the visitors walking past in this shot , must have thought the same, as they didn't give it a second glance!  James Capper does give demonstrations of his machine moving but I am not sure Jesus College would allow it on their fine lawns.  Having seen this type of  sculpture machinery on a previous visit to an exhibition, I must admit that if I hadn't had the brochure, I too would have walked past wondering what it was doing there !
