Eureka

A superlative walk around Manchester, planned by Martin and accompanied by Andy and Chris.  I learned today that Mark Twain said

"I would like to live in Manchester.  The transition between Manchester and death would be unnoticeable."

We saw, amongst other things, many of the City's fine public sculptures, including two in this picture.

In the centre is Archimedes, in a railway viaduct. The sculptor was Thompson Dagnall and it was unveiled in 1990. The sight of a naked man leaping from his bath, in a moment of discovery, was too tempting for the students of nearby UMIST, who started to climb into the bath with him, causing damage, including the loss of his nose. The sculpture is now surrounded by railings and he has a new nose.

To the left and further back is the Technology Arch by Axel Wolkenhauer (1989.)

Many more shots are on Flickr. Of particular note are a spectacular tiled pub - Peveril of the Peak - with its table football game.

Other favourite sculptures were VIMTO and Alan Turing.
