Flying ants

I opened my compost bin to be greeted my an massive swarm of flying ants. I don't generally have a problem with insects but these and Daddy Long Legs make my skin crawl. I am even itching as I type this!
I don't know the process by which they sprout wings (and I haven't time to look it up now) but at least it is a short lived phenomena.
