Old Man
I met Old Man near Waterfront Park in Portland this morning. He was bundled up in a tarp stretching out from a shopping cart. "I earned that name when I was at the federal penitentiary," he told me. "Forty seven years in there. Just got out 7 months ago."
I was drawn to Old Man because of the cool jazz he was playing from a portable radio. We talked about our favorite music and things that make us dance and feel good. I was particularly struck when Old Man offered his dry coat for me to sit on - the pavement was wet from an unusual July rain. He was so generous and truly concerned with my comfort as we talked.
Thankful for the conversation, he invited me back when it isn't raining so hard. "I got lots of stories," he said. I know I will definitely go back to hear more.
The extra photo shows the innovative work of artist Andrew Lonnquist. His work can be seen at Olander Earthworks. It really is pretty cool stuff and I'm going to head back there soon to purchase something from him.
