Victorian.....

..... bottle dump.

This evening I had a run in the rain over to Middleton. I ran back home via the river and stopped to explore the strip of land between the river and the cemetry. The land is usually overgrown with weeds and grasses, but in recent months it appears that someone had been digging for treasure.

The land looks to have been a Victorian bottle dump. A large area has been cleared of weeds and there are pits and craters everywhere like something resembling the Somme, with spoil heaps of soil full of old glass bottles and broken pottery. There were clay pipes, broken candle sticks and shards of beautifully painted ceramics. The bottle hunters have obviously taken all the choicest specimines to add to their collections or sell.

It dosnt look as though whoever is digging has permission. hopefully none of the dogs that get taken for walks along the river will stray in to the area as the amount of broken shards are bound to cause injuries. A lot of the plainer remaining bottles still looked to have residues of their contents remaining. I was tempted to take a few of the more interesting pieces home but as I was running wasn't able to carry them.

I have no Internet access this evening so am uploading this via the iPhone app, I'll hopefully have the interweb up and running later and will catch up with viewing blips and comments then. But for now, today's blip is the.....

..... Victorian bottle dump.
