Down train entering Corfe station

The signal box is fast becoming an an anachronism on the main line railways: signalling in the entire South West of England will be managed from a single centre at Basingstoke.  But on Swanage Railway the old system survives.

The man in a black suit who seems to be gesticulating is in fact holding up a token which - once the driver has received it - will give to this train sole control of the next single-track stretch of railway, on the way to Swanage.
